16 Nepali Workers Reportedly Held Hostage at Haryana Poultry Farm in Disturbing Labor Abuse Case
Sixteen workers from a Musahar settlement in Mahottari are reportedly trapped and tortured at a poultry farm in Haryana, India, as Nepali authorities move to coordinate a rescue.
Sixteen workers from Bardibas Municipality-14 in Mahottari are reportedly being held captive at a poultry farm in Haryana, India, in a case that has raised urgent concerns about labor exploitation and cross-border trafficking. According to local authorities, the group includes ten men, six women, and one minor, and they were allegedly subjected to torture after traveling to India in search of work.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Guru Prasad Timilsina of the Area Police Office Bardibas said efforts are underway to coordinate their rescue. The workers are believed to be in Jind district, under the jurisdiction of Jhajjar police station, where they are reportedly being denied freedom of movement and trapped at the farm.
What is known so far
The workers came from a Musahar settlement, one of the most economically vulnerable communities in the region, and allegedly left Nepal to find employment opportunities in India. Instead of receiving work and shelter, they are said to have been confined and mistreated at the poultry farm.
Authorities have not yet released full details on how the workers were taken there or who is responsible for their alleged confinement. The case is still developing, and officials are focusing on rescue coordination and verification of the workers' condition.
Why the case matters
This incident highlights the risks faced by low-income migrant workers who travel across the border for informal jobs. Cases involving labor abuse, restricted movement, and exploitation are especially serious when minors are involved, as appears to be the case here.
For Nepal, the situation also underscores the need for stronger protection systems for vulnerable communities seeking foreign employment, as well as faster coordination mechanisms when citizens are reported missing, trapped, or abused abroad.
Rising concern over worker safety
While poultry farms are not typically central to major tech or business headlines, this case is a stark reminder of how labor conditions can collapse into abuse when oversight is weak. The reported treatment of the workers has prompted alarm because it combines forced confinement, alleged violence, and the vulnerability of migrant labor in one incident.
As rescue efforts continue, the key question is whether local and cross-border authorities can act quickly enough to secure the workers' release and hold those responsible accountable.
