An Israeli strike in southern Lebanon has sharply escalated already volatile cross-border tensions, killing a senior Lebanese army officer and two other soldiers, according to Lebanese and Israeli accounts. The incident marks one of the most serious recent flashpoints in the widening confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah-linked forces in the border region.

What happened

According to the Lebanese Armed Forces, the strike hit a military vehicle traveling in the Nabatieh area, near the road between Kfar Tebnit and Khardali, and killed a brigadier general, a captain, and a soldier. The Israel Defense Forces said its initial inquiry indicated that two officers and a soldier from the Lebanese army were inside the vehicle when it was struck, and that the incident is under further review.

The Israeli military said it targeted the vehicle after identifying what it described as a threat to its forces and receiving indications that Hezbollah was preparing to fire on Israeli troops from the area. The strike reportedly took place on the Khardali-Nabatieh road, roughly 70 kilometers south of Beirut.

On the Israeli side, the conflict has also taken a toll, with reports that two Israeli soldiers were killed during the confrontation. The expanding death toll underscores how quickly localized strikes can spiral into wider, multi-front escalation.
