Former Chief Justice Prakashman Singh Raut has launched a new book, History of Lalitpur Journalism, at a ceremony held on Saturday in Lalitpur. The release took place during a program organized by the Federation of Nepali Journalists, Lalitpur Branch, which marked its 25th Annual General Meeting.

The book is designed to document the historical development of journalism in Lalitpur district, offering a record of how local media has grown and changed over time. In a country where journalism has played an important role in public life and democratic dialogue, the publication adds a local, district-level perspective to the wider media archive.

A milestone for local media history

Books that trace the history of journalism are more than celebratory publications. They preserve institutional memory, capture major turning points, and recognize the people who shaped the profession. In that sense, History of Lalitpur Journalism appears to be both a reference work and a tribute to generations of reporters, editors, and media workers who helped build Lalitpur’s journalistic identity.

The launch also reflects a broader trend in Nepal’s media landscape, where journalism history is increasingly being documented through research-driven books and public events. Recent publications on the evolution of Nepali media have similarly highlighted the sector’s shift from print-era reporting to the digital age.

Seven journalists honored

During the same program, seven journalists were recognized for their contributions to the field. The honors underscored the event’s dual purpose: celebrating the district’s media heritage while acknowledging the ongoing work of journalists today.

Such recognition matters in local journalism, where reporters often work with limited resources but play a central role in informing communities, documenting civic life, and holding institutions accountable.

Why this book matters

History of Lalitpur Journalism is significant because it focuses on a specific place and its media journey. Lalitpur has long been one of Nepal’s important cultural and political centers, and documenting its journalism history helps preserve a record of how local news media has responded to social change, public debate, and technological shifts.

For readers, journalists, and media students, the book may serve as a useful window into how regional journalism develops, adapts, and contributes to the larger national conversation.
