In a decisive show of unity, Rabi Lamichhane has been elected unopposed as the President of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) during the party's first national general convention in Chitwan. Bhuvan KC, Chief of the RSP Central Election Commission, confirmed the result on Tuesday night, noting that Lamichhane remained the sole candidate for the presidency.

This victory solidifies Lamichhane's leadership for a second consecutive term, continuing his stewardship since the party was founded in July 2022. The convention is currently underway in Bharatpur, Chitwan, drawing key political figures and party members to witness this milestone.

Lamichhane's political paper, presented during the closed session, portrays the RSP as a mature political force. He emphasized that social democracy will serve as the party's principal political doctrine, built on five pillars: a competitive liberal economy, rule of law, accountable government, a welfare state, and an equitable, inclusive society. The party also proposed transforming the National Assembly into a non-partisan chamber of experts, with the Vice President serving as its chairperson.

The nomination for Lamichhane's chairmanship bid was proposed by senior party leader and Prime Minister Balen Shah, signaling strong internal support. This endorsement adds weight to Lamichhane's position as the RSP continues its surge in popularity, driven by younger voters following the 2025 Gen Z protest movement.

Despite recent challenges, including a reported attack on a vehicle carrying Lamichhane in Chitwan during an election rally, the party remains resilient. Lamichhane was not hurt, and he publicly described the incident as an attack against him, further galvanizing his supporters.

With the RSP securing a near two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives in the 2026 general election, Lamichhane's unopposed election underscores the party's growing influence in Nepal's political landscape. His leadership continues to define the RSP's trajectory as it pushes for reform and accountability in the nation's governance.
