Six metropolitan cities in Nepal have officially unveiled their annual budgets for the fiscal year 2083/84, marking a pivotal step toward modernizing urban infrastructure and boosting agricultural entrepreneurship. Aligned with the Local Government Operation Act 2074, these budgets place a strong emphasis on good governance, urban development, and economic innovation while offering significant service and tax exemptions to citizens and businesses.
Under the new fiscal framework, all local governments are legally mandated to disclose their financial plans by the 10th of Ashad, ensuring transparency and timely implementation. The budgets prioritize critical areas such as waste management, education reform, and employment generation, with Kathmandu Metropolitan City alone allocating Rs 25.88 billion to advance these goals. Notably, the plans also include expansions of safe public transport initiatives like the Blue Buses for women and enhanced urban health services.
Beyond local priorities, the national budget for 2083/84, presented by Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle, features a total size of Rs 2.124 trillion, with major tax reforms including a doubling of the income tax exemption threshold to Rs 1 million and a 10% VAT rebate for digital payment users. These reforms aim to shift Nepal from a consumption-driven economy to one built on investment, production, and technology, while supporting hydropower exports, renewable energy, and AI infrastructure development.
With a unified focus on balanced development across all provinces, the 2083/84 budget sets a bold vision for Nepal's future, combining local innovation with national economic transformation to create a more resilient, inclusive, and prosperous society.
