Nepal is days away from opening a project that could reshape travel at the capital’s western gateway: the Nagdhunga-Sisnekhola tunnel, the country’s first road tunnel, is set to be formally inaugurated this Monday. Built to ease traffic between Kathmandu and Dhading, the tunnel is being positioned as one of Nepal’s most important transport upgrades in years.

Recent visuals from the site show the tunnel and the Balambu flyover fully illuminated with newly installed streetlights, giving the entire corridor a finished, ready-for-service look. The project began construction in October 2019 and has now reached the point where the government is preparing to put it into operation after years of work.

A landmark for Nepal’s road network

The tunnel connects Sisnekhola in Dhading with Totipakha in Chandragiri municipality in Kathmandu, cutting through one of the most congested and difficult stretches of the Tribhuvan Highway. It is intended to reduce travel time, improve safety, and ease the long-standing bottlenecks at Nagdhunga, a critical entry point into the Kathmandu Valley.

Earlier reports describe the tunnel as a major breakthrough for Nepal’s infrastructure ambitions, with the main passage stretching roughly 2.7 kilometers and accompanied by a separate evacuation tunnel and supporting road structures.
