Nepal’s Korala Border Turns Into an EV Flashpoint as 774 Vehicles Are Seized

Nepal’s newly active Korala border route has quickly become the center of a major enforcement operation after the Armed Police Force seized 774 electric vehicles suspected of customs evasion. Authorities said the vehicles were intercepted in multiple locations, including Jomsom and Kusma, after an initial detention led investigators to uncover a much larger shipment.

APF spokesperson Bishnu Prasad Bhatta confirmed that the operation expanded after the first group of vehicles was held on Wednesday night. As officers tracked the movement of additional units, the total continued to rise, turning what began as a routine enforcement action into one of the most significant EV seizures reported at the border route.

The Korala crossing in Upper Mustang has recently emerged as an important trade corridor, especially as Nepal looks for alternatives when other routes are disrupted. Recent reporting has shown a sharp rise in EV imports through the point, with hundreds of vehicles entering through the route in a short period and customs offices already managing heavy traffic from new shipments. That rapid growth has also increased scrutiny around documentation, taxation, and clearance procedures.

The latest seizure highlights the tension between fast-moving cross-border trade and border enforcement. Electric vehicles are becoming a major import category in Nepal, and the Korala route is now drawing attention not just as a commercial gateway, but also as a potential hotspot for customs violations.

For authorities, the immediate challenge is to verify how the vehicles entered, whether duties were properly declared, and who was responsible for moving them beyond the border. For traders and importers, the case is a warning that the Korala corridor is now under close watch as officials step up inspections across Mustang and beyond.
