Nepal's Universities Get New Leadership: Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa Named Vice-Chancellor of Tribhuvan University
Prime Minister Balendra Shah, as Chancellor, appoints new Vice-Chancellors to seven major universities in Nepal, including Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa for Tribhuvan University, marking a milestone in merit-based academic governance.
In a landmark move for Nepal's higher education sector, Prime Minister Balendra Shah, acting in his capacity as Chancellor, has appointed new Vice-Chancellors to seven major universities across the country. The appointments, finalized on Friday, were followed by an official oath-taking ceremony in Kathmandu, signaling a fresh chapter in academic leadership.
Key Appointments Across Seven Universities
Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa has been named the Vice-Chancellor of Tribhuvan University, the oldest and largest university in Nepal. His appointment comes after a rigorous selection process that included screening of credentials, vision papers, and interviews. Kisan Datta Bhatta will lead Far-Western University, while Rajan Suwal will take charge of Mid-Western University, bringing regional expertise to these institutions.
These appointments reflect the government's commitment to a merit-based selection process for university heads. The initiative was launched after an ordinance removed previous office-bearers, prompting a fresh appointment process through open competition. Over 218 candidates applied for vice-chancellor positions across the eight universities, with most institutions shortlisting 10 candidates each.
Milestone in Merit-Based Academic Governance
The selection committee awarded 35 marks based on personal credentials and 65 marks for vision papers, action plans, presentations, and interviews. This integrated procedure ensures that candidates are evaluated holistically, prioritizing both academic excellence and strategic vision.
Notably, the process has entered its decisive phase for universities including Tribhuvan University, Purbanchal University, Pokhara University, Lumbini Buddhist University, Agriculture and Forestry University, Mid-West University, Far Western University, and Rajarshi Janak University. The Ministry of Education has also initiated open competition for top positions in other institutions, including Kathmandu University and several health science academies.
Impact on Nepal's Higher Education Landscape
With new leadership in place, these universities are expected to implement innovative policies, enhance research capabilities, and improve student outcomes. The appointments underscore the government's vision of transforming Nepal's higher education system into a globally competitive framework.
As the academic community welcomes these new leaders, the focus now shifts to translating their vision into action, ensuring that Nepal's universities become hubs of knowledge, innovation, and national development.
