A 73-year-old Nepali passenger, Shyamhari Marahatta, died onboard a Turkish Airlines flight as it landed at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu after traveling from the United States with his wife.
A 73-year-old Nepali man, Shyamhari Marahatta, died onboard a Turkish Airlines flight while returning to Nepal from the United States with his wife. According to police, he was found unconscious as the aircraft landed at Tribhuvan International Airport at 6:35 AM on Sunday.
Marahatta was a resident of Barpak Sulikot-2 in Gorkha. The incident was confirmed by the Gaushala Police Circle, which said he was traveling with his wife when the medical emergency occurred.
What is known so far
News reports say Marahatta was on a Turkish Airlines flight arriving from the US when he was discovered unconscious near the time of landing. Authorities have not yet publicly released a cause of death.
The case adds to a small number of recent in-flight medical emergencies involving Turkish Airlines passengers, underscoring how quickly such situations can turn critical even on long-haul international routes.
Why this matters
Long-distance flights can be especially challenging for older travelers or passengers with pre-existing health conditions because of cabin pressure, limited mobility, and delayed access to advanced medical care. In situations like this, flight crews rely on onboard first aid, passenger assistance if available, and rapid coordination with airport medical teams after landing.
For Marahatta's family, what was meant to be a return trip home ended in tragedy just moments before arrival in Kathmandu.
