Rain-Triggered Landslide Cuts Off Panchkhapan-Chainpur Road in Sankhuwasabha
Continuous rainfall has sparked a landslide in Sankhuwasabha, washing away part of the Bhibare-Bhaisichok-Pipaldanda road and disrupting travel between Panchkhapan and Chainpur as floodwaters add to the damage.
Continuous rain since Friday night has triggered a landslide in Sankhuwasabha, blocking the road that connects Panchkhapan and Chainpur municipalities and disrupting movement across the area.
Police Inspector Dhan Bahadur Rajbanshi said the landslide washed away about 15 meters of the Bhibare-Bhaisichok-Pipaldanda road section, leaving the route unusable for vehicles and commuters.
The situation has been worsened by flooding in the Chiunkhuwa Khola near the Kalleri area, which has further hampered transportation and raised concerns about wider damage in the district.
What the disruption means on the ground
The blocked road is a key local connection, so the landslide has immediately affected daily travel, goods movement, and access to nearby settlements. With water levels also rising in the area, recovery efforts may take longer if rain continues.
Officials are monitoring the damaged section and the surrounding flood-affected area, but the combination of slope collapse and swollen water flow makes quick restoration difficult.
A wider monsoon warning
This incident adds to the growing pressure on transport infrastructure in eastern Nepal during the rainy season. Roads in hill districts are especially vulnerable when prolonged rainfall weakens slopes, erodes embankments, and cuts off narrow mountain routes.
For residents of Panchkhapan, Chainpur, and nearby areas, the immediate priority is safer alternate movement while authorities assess whether more road sections are at risk.
