Nine sitting ministers have officially filed their candidacies for central committee positions, signaling an intense internal competition as the party prepares to elect its new leadership structure.
Key Figures in the Spotlight
Among the notable candidates is Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle, representing Gandaki Province, who is vying for a seat in the open category. His candidacy is seen as a major move, given his influential role in national economic policy. Another high-profile contender is Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal, also competing in the open category, whose international experience could shape the party’s future diplomatic stance.
Other ministers seeking central committee seats include Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, Sobita Gautam, and Sasmit Pokharel, each bringing unique regional and policy expertise to the race.
Over 400 Candidates Vie for 99 Seats
The convention has drawn massive participation, with over 400 candidates filing nominations for the 99 central committee positions. Around 4,000 representatives are expected to cast votes using 80 electronic voting machines, while members abroad can vote via a mobile app.
With Rabi Lamichhane already elected unopposed as party chair, the focus now shifts to the central committee election, which will determine the party’s office bearers and set the direction for its next four years.
