The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has completed its first district convention in Bhaktapur with the election of a new working committee led by Rameshwar Basnet.

According to the reported results, Basnet was elected district president unopposed, while Smriti Bhattarai also secured the post of vice president without contest. The convention, held on Saturday, marked the conclusion of the party’s inaugural district-level gathering in the area.

A key organizational step for the party

The Bhaktapur convention is part of RSP’s wider effort to strengthen its organizational presence at the district level. As one of Nepal’s newer political forces, the party has been building local structures to expand its reach beyond the national stage.

RSP is a centrist political party in Nepal and has emerged as a significant player in recent years. Its leadership and district-level activity have been closely watched as the party works to establish a more formal grassroots network.

Unopposed elections signal internal consensus

The fact that both Basnet and Bhattarai were elected unopposed suggests a relatively smooth transition within the district chapter. In political party organization, uncontested elections often point to internal agreement, at least at the local level, and can help a party move faster into operational work after a convention.

For Bhaktapur, the new committee now takes charge with the task of translating party momentum into local coordination, member engagement, and future political mobilization.

Why this matters

District conventions are important for parties like RSP because they help formalize leadership, build local legitimacy, and prepare the ground for broader electoral and organizational activity. A functioning district committee can become the backbone for outreach, campaigning, and policy messaging.

With the Bhaktapur convention now concluded, the party has added another piece to its growing district-level structure. The newly elected leadership will be expected to carry that momentum forward and strengthen RSP’s presence in one of the Kathmandu Valley’s politically important districts.
