Wild Elephant Calf Found Dead in Sunsari, Triggering Forest and Police Investigation
A wild elephant calf was discovered dead in Barahakshetra Municipality-2, Sunsari, after reportedly moving with a herd toward the forest on Wednesday night. Officials are now investigating what caused the animal’s death.
A wild elephant calf was found dead in the Gahane Khola stream in Barahakshetra Municipality-2, Sunsari, in a case now being examined by police and forest officials. According to local authorities, the calf had been moving with a herd from the Jabdi area toward the forest on Wednesday night before its carcass was discovered in the Bis RD area on Thursday morning.
The Area Police Office Mahendranagar said the body was found after the animal likely became separated from the herd during the night movement. Officials from the police and forest office have begun an investigation to determine the exact cause of death.
The discovery has drawn attention because elephant deaths in Sunsari have been reported before, highlighting the ongoing tension between wildlife movement and human-dominated landscapes in the region. In previous cases from Barahakshetra, officials have also found dead wild elephants in and around agricultural areas near community forests, underscoring how vulnerable these animals can be while navigating fragmented habitat.
At this stage, authorities have not confirmed whether the calf died from an accident, natural causes, or another factor. The investigation will likely focus on the animal’s condition, the terrain where it was found, and any signs of injury or environmental hazards in the stream area.
The incident adds another grim entry to Nepal’s record of human-wildlife conflict and wildlife mortality, especially in areas where elephant herds regularly move between forest corridors and settlements.
